How to Control Spotify While coding Without Switching Tabs

Play, pause and skip from anywhere in Chrome, so music never interrupts your work.

💡 Overview

If you spend your day coding, you already know how a small detour breaks concentration. You live in an editor, a terminal and a browser full of docs, and every context switch costs you the mental stack you just built. Reaching for the Spotify tab mid-debug means leaving the stack trace you were reading.

Spotify-Web Playback Controller talks to the Spotify Web Player at open.spotify.com through a small content script, so you can play, pause, skip and go back using keyboard shortcuts or a toolbar popup. The Web Player stays in its own tab, out of sight, and you never have to visit it again.

🧭 A Day of Software Developers

You live in an editor, a terminal and a browser full of docs, and every context switch costs you the mental stack you just built.

The problem: Reaching for the Spotify tab mid-debug means leaving the stack trace you were reading.

The fix: Bind play/pause to a shortcut you can hit with your left hand while your right stays on the mouse or trackpad.

🚀 Try It in Three Steps

  1. Open open.spotify.com in a Chrome tab and start any playlist.
  2. Pin Spotify-Web Playback Controller to your toolbar.
  3. Use Shift+Alt+Up to play or pause, and Shift+Alt+Right or Left to change tracks.

✨ What You Get

  • Dynamic album-art backdrops: A blurred, color-adaptive background drawn from the current artwork, in dark or light theme.
  • Four default hotkeys: Shift+Alt+Up toggles play and pause, Right skips, Left goes back and Down pauses only.
  • Playback speed 0.5x to 2.0x: Presets at 1.0x, 1.25x, 1.5x and 2.0x, locked across track changes.
